Population immunity is "absolutely plausible" if enough individuals are vaccinated from COVID, according to Fauci

Anthony Fauci: “It is ‘entirely conceivable, and likely, as a matter of fact,’ that the country could reach a level of population immunity where the virus isn’t ‘dominating’ people’s lives anymore.” “For that level of vaccinations,” Fauci said, “we first need to get to the 50 million or so people who are eligible to be vaccinated but haven’t been vaccinated.” A lot of people who are eligible to get a vaccine have been fully vaccinated, but that’s still only about 65% of people who are eligible to get one. In addition to this, a lot of people haven’t been given booster shots.

“It is a must to get those people who haven’t been vaccinated to keep the spread down as much as possible if you want to get back to normal,” Fauci said. He also said that there has been a rise in breakthrough cases, which he blamed on Omicron’s ability to spread from person to person.

Vaccinated and boosted are less likely to get sick

He also stated that people who have been vaccinated and boosted are less likely to get sick. “The likelihood of a vaccinated and boosted person of getting seriously ill from the infection is very, very low.” Fauci said that people should not be afraid to get their first shots or a booster because of the rise in breakthrough cases.

The information as of now is that there is a big difference between people who have been vaccinated and people who haven’t been vaccinated when they get sick. People who haven’t been vaccinated should stay home when they’re sick, just like they do when they’re sick. “When you get vaccinated, the virus can still spread from person to person, even though the transmission level drops dramatically and quickly when you get it. People who want to make sure they aren’t infected should get tested one to two days before they meet with their families,” says Fauci.
